LA VON   SCHOOLCRAFT

Black River Falls, WI

            LaVon Schoolcraft, age 58, of rural Black River Falls, died unexpectedly on Saturday, January 26, 2008 in her home.

            LaVon Judith Mae Springer was born on December 18, 1949 in Black River Falls to Edmand and Bernice (Soper) Springer.  She was raised in the Black River Falls, Millston and Hatfield areas.  She was a graduate of Black River Falls High School.

            LaVon married Harry Schoolcraft on June 26, 1971 in Black River Falls.  The couple has lived in the Shamrock area of Jackson County since 1982.

            She had been employed in the insurance industry for 25 years and had been employed by Westland Insurance, Rural Insurance, and Greater Insurance Service Corporation.  She was a customer service representative.

            LaVon was a member of the Thompson-RedCloud VFW Post 1959 Auxiliary.

            She loved her family and friends.  She enjoyed gardening, bird feeding and bird watching, and traveling on family trips.

            Survivors include her husband, Harry; 2 daughters, Amy Schoolcraft of Black River Falls and Ann Schoolcraft of Eau Claire; a son, Jon (Michelle) Schoolcraft of Black River Falls; 2 sisters, Carol (Keith) Fitzpatrick of Black River Falls and Emilie (Kim Kersting) Springer of Whitehall; 4 brothers, Calvin (Alice) Spinger of Klamath Falls, Oregon, Daniel (Sandra) Springer and Richard (Leona) Springer both of Seaton, Illinois, and Lowell “ Ole” Springer; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

            LaVon was preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers, Lloyd and Larry Springer.

            Funeral services will be Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 11 A.M. from the Black River Falls United Methodist Church.  Pastor Kathleen Jury will officiate.  Burial will be in the Shamrock Union Cemetery, rural Black River Falls.

CHARLES   BUD  JENNESS

Hatfield, Wis.

            Charles Bud Jenness, infant son of Eric and Jessica (Johnson) Jenness of Hatfield died on Thursday, January 24, 2008 in Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls, Wis.

            In addition to his parents, Charles is survived by a sister, Lily at home; grandparents, John and Sheryl Jenness of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Terri and John Crudo of New Brighton, Minn., and Don and Sally Johnson of Cologne, Minn.; great grandparents, Ted and Dorothy Janicki of Neillsville, Wis., Shirley Soucek of Tucson, Ariz., Mary and Arnold Popp of Crystal, Minn., and Kathy and Larry Johnson of Magrath, Minn.; uncles and aunts, Crystal Jenness of Champlin, Minn., Leah Jenness of Stillwater, Minn., John Jenness of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Christopher Johnson of Eveleth, Minn., and Jacquelyn Crudo of Fargo, ND; cousins, Autumn Dickenson and Addison Jenness; great aunts and great uncles; and other relatives and friends.

            Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at the Gearhart Funeral Home, 11275 Foley Blvd., Coon Rapids, Minn.  55448   (763-755-6300).  Burial will be in Morningside Cemetery, Coon Rapids.

JOSEPHINE  N.  “JOSIE”  WOOD

Black River Falls, Wis.

            Josephine N. “Josie” Wood, age 84, of Black River Falls, Wis., died on Friday, January 25, 2008 at the Pine View Care Center, Black River Falls.

            Josephine Nettie Janicki was born on March 11, 1923 in Jackson County to Joseph and Mary (Karkiewicz) Janicki.  She was raised in Jackson County and graduated from Merrillan High School.

            Josie was united in marriage to Victor A. Wood on November 12, 1941 in Black River Falls.  They lived in Merrillan and Melrose and then farmed in the Town of Franklin, Jackson County, for many years.  They also had lived in Chicago and St. Paul.  Victor and Josie later lived in Black River Falls for many years and spent the winter months in Mission, Texas.  Victor Wood died on June 12, 2007.

            In addition to having helped her husband farm, Josie also was employed as a seamstress repairing damaged uniforms and placing military patches on uniforms, at Fort McCoy during World War II.   During this time, she began collecting military patches that were given to her by grateful soldiers.  She then used these patches to entirely cover and decorate a coat.  She had also been employed at a furniture factory in Chicago and at an Armour Packing Plant in St. Paul.  In 1968, Victor Wood founded Wood Sales and Service, Inc. of Black River Falls.  Josie then began working as a bookkeeper and “right hand man” to Victor in the operation of Wood Sales and Service, Inc. and Surplus World for many years.

            Josie was a member of the Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church.  She also had been a former member of the Squaw Creek Ladies Aid, a former member of a gardening club, and was active in 4H for many years.

            She was fond of vegetable and flower gardening, canning, knitting, sewing, crocheting, and hunting and fishing with Victor and family members.  She had the distinction of having made over 400 lap and baby quilts for Pine View Care Center, Black River Memorial Hospital, a hospital in McAllen, Texas, and the Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church.  Of the 400 quilts, 200 baby quilts were made and donated to the Evangelical Lutheran Church for missions.

            Survivors include 4 daughters, Judy (Lance) Schulze and Mary Lou Zuege both of Milwaukee, Vicki Amundson of Black River Falls, and Kathy (Marvin) Anderson of Canyon Lake, Texas; 2 sons, Harvey (Diane) Wood and Jeffrey Wood both of Black River Falls; 15 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Regina Mays of Troy, Missouri, and Clara St. John of Vidor, Texas; a brother, Ted (Dorothy) Janicki of Neillsville; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

            In addition to her husband, Victor, Josie was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Megan Anderson; 2 sons-in-law, Dean Amundson and Gordon Zuege; 4 sisters, Prixeda “Tux’ Fisher, Helen Wood, Wanda Kasprzak, and Clementina Dixon; and 3 brothers, Clements Janicki, Walter Janicki, and Joseph Janicki.

            Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at 11 A.M. from the Evangelical Lutheran Church and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, both in Black River Falls.  Pastor Ramie Bakken will officiate.

            Family and friends are invited for visitation on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Buswell Funeral Home (www.buswellfuneralhome.com), Black River Falls, and at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. until services.  The family asks that any memorials be directed to the Black River Falls Hospital Fund. 

RALPH  K.  LOPEZ

Black River Falls/Baraboo, Wis.

            Ralph K. Lopez, age 45, of Baraboo and formerly of Black River Falls, died Friday evening, January 18, 2008 in St. Claire Hospital, Baraboo.

            Ralph Kereno Lopez was born on April 22, 1962 in San Jose, Calif., to Frank and Marcella (White) Lopez.  He was raised in Stockton, Calif. and later attended San Joaquin Delta College where he received a trades degree in building construction.

            In addition to having lived in San Jose and Baraboo, he had also lived in Stockton, Calif., Black River Falls, and Las Vegas.

            Ralph was employed as a roofer for 20 years.  He also had been employed in building construction.

            He enjoyed hunting, carving, spending time with his family, camping, fishing, and bingo.

            Survivors include a 3 sons, Ralph Lopez of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., Marcos Lopez and Michael Lopez; a daughter, Marcelina Lopez of Fairfield, Calif.; 3 grandchildren, Julian Lopez, Evalina Collins, and Derek Collins III; 3 sisters, Debra (Jess) Lozano of Black River Falls, Rita Lopez, and Monica (Inis) Hernandez; 2 brothers, Samuel (Tina) Rodriguez and David Lopez; and nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

            Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, aunts, and uncles.

            Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 21, 2007 at the Ho-Chunk  District One Community Center and burial will be in the Ho-Chunk United Church of Christ Cemetery, both in rural Black River Falls.

PHILIP  W.  JOHNS

Merrillan/Beloit, WI

            Philip W. Johns, age 58, of Merrillan and formerly of Beloit, died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 17, 2008 in his home.

            Philip Wayne Johns was born on March 15, 1949 in Beloit to Scott D. and Frances B. (Salindo) Johns.  He was raised in Beloit and attended Beloit schools.  He later attended Blackhawk Technical College where he earned an associate degree as an industrial engineer technician.

            Phil was a US Navy veteran who served in Vietnam.

            He married Chrystal McHone on November 18, 1972 in South Beloit, Ill.   They were later divorced.

            He had been employed by Gardner Machine Company, Beloit Power Systems, and Midstates.  Since the mid-1980’s, he was employed as a technical specialist by Seco Carboloy.  He had also owned and operated his own company, Metro Industries.

            Phil enjoyed hunting, fishing, the Green Bay Packers, do-it-yourself/home improvement projects, news casts, and politics.  He had a great sense of humor.  He also was called “Papa Johns” by his grandchildren.

            Survivors include a son, Michael (Renee) Johns of Beloit; a daughter, Shelly Olson of Merrillan; 4 grandchildren, Kelsey LaRosa, Mariah Olson, Emily Johns, and Lauren Johns; his ex-wife, Chrystal Johns of Beloit; a sister, Cynthia MacNees of Beloit; a brother, Sheldon Johns of Beloit; a niece, April MacNees; a nephew, Gordon “Mac” MacNees, Jr.; and special friends, Jeff Smith of Cataract and Gene Wright of Beloit.

            Phil was preceded in death by his parents; a brother-in-law, Gordon MacNees; and a special friend, Dave Atkinson.

            Memorial services will be held later in Beloit and will be announced by the Daley-Murphy-Wisch Funeral Home of Beloit.

ANN M. PRATT

Black River Falls, Wis.

            Ann M. Pratt, age 56, of Black River Falls, died unexpectedly on Monday, January 14, 2008 at Black River Memorial Hospital.

            Ann Marie Pratt was born on July 27, 1951 in Black River Falls to Floyd Sr. and Violet (Noren) Pratt.  She was raised in Black River Falls and graduated from Black River Falls High School.  She was a life long resident of Black River Falls.

            Ann was first employed at the Roma Pizza factory in Black River Falls.  At the time of her death, she was employed at the Black River Memorial Hospital where she was the laundry coordinator.  She was employed at the hospital for 32 years.

            She was a lifetime member of the Black River Falls United Methodist Church.

            Ann enjoyed reading romance novels, movies, computer games, flowers, birds, her cats, country western music, making quilts, and going to the La Crosse area to shop every other weekend.  She loved spending time with her family and traveling. She and her mother, Violet, traveled to Germany.

             Survivors include her parents, Floyd Sr. and Violet Pratt; 4 sisters, Jackie Hagen and Lisa (fiancé, Michael Lockemy, Sr.) Warner both of Black River Falls, Ellen (companion, James Condos) Rudolph of Shakopee, Minn., and Shelley (companion, Tom) Roberts of Kimberly, Wis.; a brother, Floyd (Rene) Pratt, Jr. of Sparta; 2 aunts, Ann Berry of Black River Falls and Janet (Fred) Kindschy of Osseo; an uncle, LaMont (Doris) Pratt of Modesto, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.

            She was preceded in death by a sister, Debra Johnson.

            Funeral services will be at 11 A.M. on Friday, January 18, 2008 at the Black River Falls United Methodist Church.  Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Black River Falls.  Pastor Kathleen Jury will officiate.

ELIZABETH R. “BETTY” BLINN-WING ROZMENOSKI (MRS. RAYMOND)

Black River Falls/La Crosse, Wis.

            Elizabeth R. “Betty” Blinn-Wing Rozmenoski (Mrs. Raymond), age 83, of Black River Falls and formerly of La Crosse, died on Friday, January 4, 2008 in Pine View Care Center, Black River Falls.

            The former Elizabeth Rae Blinn was born on December 8, 1924 in La Crosse to Theobold and Olga (Nelson) Blinn.  She was raised in La Crosse and graduated from Logan High School in 1943.

            Betty was a long time employee of La Crosse Rubber Mills and the Pines Motor Lodge of Black River Falls.

            She married Raymond Rozmenoski on April 8, 1978 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Black River Falls.

            Betty was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Black River Falls.

            She enjoyed gambling, travel, bus trips, and church bingo.  She had the distinction of having gone white water rafting while she was in her 60’s.

            Survivors include her husband, Ray; 2 daughters, Christy Kulas and Tracie (Melvin) Davies both of Black River Falls; 3 sons, Ricky (Sandra) Wing  and Jeffrey (Jensine) Wing both of Onalaska, and J. (Fredalene) Wing of Hayburn, Idaho; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Betty Rozmenoski of Black River Falls; and a brother-in-law, Gerald Sweet of Black River Falls.

            She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Roetta Smith.

            A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, both in Black River Falls.  Rev. Fr. Robert Streveler will officiate.

            Family and friends are invited for visitation from 5 to 7 P.M. on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at the Buswell Funeral Home (www.buswellfuneralhome.com), Black River Falls, and at the church on Wednesday from 10 A.M. until services.  There will be a prayer service at 7 P.M. on Tuesday in the funeral home.

MARLENE M. “MOLLY” MULVANEY

Merrillan, Wis.

            Marlene M. “Molly” Mulvaney, age 71, of Merrillan died Wednesday, January 2, 2008 in Black River Memorial Hospital.

            Marlene Marie Schlafke was born on April 13, 1936 in Marshfield to Raymond and Helen (Stueber) Schlafke.  She was raised in Marshfield and graduated from Columbus High School, Marshfield.

            Molly married Loren Mulvaney in August of 1956 in Marshfield.  She worked as a waitress while Loren was a career railroader.  They later moved to Merrillan where they owned and operated a snowmobile shop/pool hall.  They next bought the Motel Merrillan which they operated for 20 years.

            Molly’s hobbies included snowmobiling, motorcycle riding, hunting, fishing, boating, gardening, caring for her pets, golfing and bowling.  She dearly loved wild birds and wild animals and they loved her.   She especially enjoyed caring for wild creatures, one of  which was a motherless deer fawn, which she named “Fawna.”

            She is survived by her husband, Loren; a son, Timothy (Shirley Goode) Mulvaney; a daughter, Laurinda (Scott) Ruxton; grandchildren, Jennifer (Darrell) Zawistowski, Loren (Nicci Friemoth) Parker, Stephanie (Luis) Duran, Dustin (Hannah Schmidt) Ruxton, Andrew Schroeder, Chelsea Schroeder, and Wyatt Mulvaney; 5 great-grandchildren with 2 more “on-the-way;” and a sister, Carol (Dan) Lathrop.

            Molly was preceded in death by her mother and father; a brother; and a great-grandchild.

            Funeral services will be at 10 A.M. on Monday, January 7, 2008 at the Buswell Funeral Home (www.buswellfuneralhome.com), Black River Falls.  Rev. Fr. Robert Streveler will officiate and burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Merrillan.

WILLIAM  R. “BILL”  MALKO

Waterford, Wis.

            William R. “Bill” Malko, age 39, of Waterford, died Sunday, December 30, 2007 in the Township of Irving, Jackson County, Wis.

            William Richard Malko was born on June 13, 1968 in Milwaukee to Richard Warren and Marjorie Ruth (Haas) Malko.  He was raised in Racine and graduated from Case High School.

            Bill married Rebecca Ann “Becky” Rosenbaum on May 26, 1986 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

            He had been employed as a security guard at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas for 12 years.   He had also been employed as a factory worker and a forklift operator.

            In addition to having lived in Racine, Las Vegas, and Waterford, Bill also had lived in Pennsylvania, Mississippi, California, Germany for 4 years, and Texas.

            Survivors include his wife, Becky; 2 daughters, JoAnna Birdie Malko and Alexandria Ruth Malko both at home; his mother, Marjorie Malko; and 2 sisters, Virginia Lampman and Carolyn (Mark) Silber.

            He was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents, and a nephew.

            Memorial services will be held at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery.

VALDA  M. (MRS. FERRIS) TANDE

Black River Falls, WI

            Valda M. (Mrs. Ferris) Tande, age 79, of Black River Falls, died Thursday, December 27, 2007 in Pine View Care Center, Black River Falls.

            Valda May Smith was born on March 13, 1928 at her home at the Hawk Island area, near Black River Falls to Oliver and Valda (Goodenough) Smith. 

            She married Ferris L. Tande of Alma Center on May 7, 1945 in Black River Falls.  The couple first lived in Hixton for 8 years.  They were married for 62 years and raised their family mainly in the Squaw Creek area.

            Valda was a charter member of the Assembly of God Church (now known as Family Worship Assembly) of Black River Falls. She also was a member of the Women’s Ministries. 

            She was a dedicated life-long homemaker.  Her faith and family were very important to her.

            Survivors include her husband, Ferris; 3 daughters, Lee (Robert) Olson of Balsam Lake, Wis., Ida (John) Carlin of Madison, and Joy (Joel) Peterson of Black River Falls; 2 sons, Milo (Sue) Tande and Steven (Sherri) Tande both of Black River Falls; a daughter-in-law, Pamela Tande of West Allis; 15 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Verna (Elmer) Purpus of Tomah and Phyllis Roach of Black River Falls; a brother, Milo Smith of Janesville; 2 sisters-in-law, Gloria Smith of Merrillan and Patricia Smith of Janesville; and numerous other relatives and friends.

            She was preceded in death by a son, Gerhard “Gary” Tande; her parents: 5 brothers, Frank, Lloyd, Willard, Chester, and Oliver Smith; and 3 sisters, Margaret Homme, Mary Lena Smith, and Rose Dearwester. 

            Funeral services will be at 11 A.M. on Monday, December 31, 2007 at the Family Worship Assembly and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, both in Black River Falls. Pastor Greg Kalyvas will officiate.

            Honorary casket bearers will be her grandsons, Casey Olson, Matthew Tande, and Josh Carlin.  Casket bearers will be her grandsons, Craig Olson, Troy Tande, Travis Tande, Eric Tande, Jeremy Carlin, and Jared Peterson.

NORMA  J.  WOOD

Black River Falls, WI

            Norma J. Wood, age 61, of Black River Falls died on Tuesday, December 25, 2007 in Black River Memorial Hospital.

            Norma Jean Vance was born on January 3, 1946 in Black River Falls to Robert and Mavis (Schiller) Vance.  She was raised in the Town of Manchester, Jackson County, and graduated from Black River Falls High School in 1964. With the exception of one year spent in Sparta, Norma had lived in the Town of Manchester all of her life.

            She married Maurice “Woody” Wood, Jr. on June 4, 1966 at the Shamrock Union Church, rural Black River Falls.  Woody Wood died on March 31, 1992.

            Norma had been employed at Dadco Foods of Black River Falls for 31 years.  She also had been employed by Northern Engraving of Sparta.  More recently, she had been employed as a healthcare provider by Aurora.

            She enjoyed watching deer, metal detecting, snowmobiling, cooking and baking, and traveling.

            Survivors include her mother, Mavis Vance of Black River Falls; her long-time companion and friend, William W. “Bill” Kerr of Black River Falls; 2 aunts, Rosella Schiller of Sparta and Marvel Schiller of Colorado Springs, Colorado; numerous cousins and other relative; and her cat, “Fluffy.”

            In addition to her husband, Maurice “Woody” Wood, Jr., she was preceded in death by her father, Robert Vance; 4 aunts; and 5 uncles.

            Funeral services will be at 11 A.M. on Saturday, December 29, 2007 at the Shamrock Union Church and burial will be in the Shamrock Union Cemetery, both in rural Black River Falls.  Mr. Roger Dunnam will officiate.

JARED P. “ZIP” ZIBOLSKI

Black River Falls, WI

            Jared P. “Zip” Zibolski, age 62, of Black River Falls, died Friday, December 21, 2007 in his home under the care of Black River Hospice.

            Jared Phillip Zibolski was born on February 13, 1945 in Milwaukee to Norman and Lydia (Severson) Zibolski.  On April 15, 1945, he moved with his family to the Township of Irving where the family farmed.  Following the death of his father, Norman, the family moved to Black River Falls and he graduated from Black River Falls High School.

            Zip married Betty Garbers on February 24, 1968 at the Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church.

            He was a self employed mechanic, and owned and operated DX, Amoco and Mobil gas stations.  He had also been employed at the Jackson County Iron Mine.  He later owned and operated Zip’s Automotive Repair and also was an antique dealer and dealt in sports cards.

             At one time, Zip owned and operated stock cars and served on the Black River Falls Fire Department.

            He enjoyed collecting various items and walking.

            Survivors include his wife, Betty; 4 step-children, Ron Bangart and Rick (special friend Michele McCaughtry) of Black River Falls, Judith (Tom) Slagle of Appleton and Robert (Suzette) Bangart of Ringle; 6 grandchildren, Dustin, Rebecca, Robert, Hannah, Samuel, and Jessica; 2 sisters, Dioney (Marvin) Sell of Augusta, Wis., and Debbie Schyvinch of Muskego; 3 brothers, Art (Joyce) Zibolski of Texas, Dave (Kathy) Zibolski of Milwaukee, and Bill Zibolski of Black River Falls; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

            He was preceded in death by his parents.

            Funeral services will be at 11 A.M. on Thursday, December 27, 2007 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, both in Black River Falls. Rev. Eric Bakken will officiate.

Green Bay/Black River Falls, WI

            Cheryl L. Clark, age 61, of Green Bay and formerly of Black River Falls, died Thursday, December 20, 2007 in her residence.

            Cheryl Leone Gilbertson was born on October 7, 1946 in Black River Falls to Paul Gilbertson and Annetta (Paulson) Gilbertson Hart.  She was raised in the Black River Falls area and graduated from Black River Falls High School.  She also graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing, Rochester, Minn.

            She married Gordon Clark on November 30, 1968.  They were later divorced.

            Cheryl worked for many years as a LPN in Rochester, Minn., Black River Falls, Milwaukee, and Green Bay.

            She was a long time #1 Minnesota Vikings fan.

            Survivors include her two sons, Chris (Julie) Clark of Santa Monica, Calif., and Chad (Lisa) Clark of Green Bay; 5 grandchildren, Tyler, Kadyn, Kaleb, and Kennedy Clark of Green Bay, and Alex Clark of Santa Monica, Calif; 2 brothers, Glen Gilbertson of Hixton and John (Judy) Gilbertson of Oceanside, Calif.; 2 sisters, Priscilla Lindberg of Black River Falls and Gloria (Mike) Helstad of Hixton; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; along with her special friends and her cats, Joey and Tiki.

            She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Gilbertson and Annetta Gilbertson Hart; her step-father, Walter Hart; 3 sisters, Anita Gilbertson, Paula Faux, and Gayle Yahnke Dulian; and a brother, Paul Gilbertson, Jr.

DONALD  BLACKHAWK

Black River Falls, Wis./St. Paul, Minn.

            Donald Blackhawk, age 78, of Black River Falls, Wis. and St. Paul, Minn. died on Sunday, December 16, 2007 in Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis.

            Donald was born on February 24, 1929 near Black River Falls to Andrew and Lucy (Wilson) Blackhawk.  He was raised in the Black River Falls area and attended the Dells Dam School.

            He married the former Georgelene Cavanaugh in North Dakota.  The couple lived in Kansas City, Missouri prior to moving to St. Paul.  For the past 8 years, Donald has lived both in Black River Falls and St. Paul.

            Donald was employed as a Native American student counselor by the St. Paul Public School System.  He also served as an alcohol counselor for many years, having received his training at a school in Salt Lake City, Utah.  He also served as a board member for Multi-Cultural Services/Native American Studies – University of Minnesota, and was a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation Traditional Court and was a Ho-Chunk Nation language instructor.

            He was a member of the Warrior Clan.

            Survivors include his wife, Georgelene Blackhawk of St. Paul; 2 daughters, Geraldine and Lucy Blackhawk both of St. Paul; 6 sons, Delbert of Minneapolis, and Donald Jr., Mark, Reginald, Gerald, and Andrew John Blackhawk all of St. Paul; 15 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

            He was preceded in death by a son, Russell Dean; a daughter, Lynn Marie; 3 sisters, Adele RedEagle, Margaret Olson, and Virginia Smith; and brothers.

            Funeral services will be at 12 noon on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at the Blue Wing Community Center, rural Tomah.  Burial will be in Decorah Cemetery, rural Black River Falls.

            Friends and family are invited for visitation from 5 to 7 P.M. on Tuesday at the Torkelson Funeral Home, Tomah and on Wednesday from 10 A.M. until services at the Blue Wing Community Center.

LEON V. BARROWS

Black River Falls, Wis./Waukegan, Ill.

            Leon V. Barrows, age 83, of Black River Falls and formerly of Waukegan, Ill. died Saturday, December 15, 2007 in Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls.

            Leon was born on December 22, 1923 in Waukegan to Vincent A. and Theresa (Bury) Barrows.  He was raised in Waukegan and had the distinction of being a member of the first grade school class to graduate from Holy Family School, North Chicago.  He later graduated from Waukegan Township High School.

            From 1941 to 1946, he served in the Army Air Corps.  He was a World War II veteran who served in the European Theater.

            Leon married Mary Anne Edmonds and they were later divorced.

            He was employed by National Press of Waukegan.  He had lived in Waukegan most of his life and moved to Black River Falls in 1989 and later moved to Blair.  He later returned to Black River Falls.

            Leon was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Black River Falls, the Graphics Arts Union/Teamsters Union, Knights of Columbus Council 4697 of Black River Falls, and American Veterans Post 5494 of Black River Falls.  He also was a life member of American Legion Post 0771 of Gurnee, Ill. and a life member of VFW Post 11156 of Gurnee. 

            He enjoyed fishing, coin collecting, and crossword puzzles.

            Survivors include 4 daughters, Sue (Terry) Voeller of Black River Falls, Linda (Terry) Dodge of Zion, Ill., Jacqueline Genunzio of Ft. Meyers, Fla., and Nancy Barrows of Kenosha; 4 sons, Robert (Cathy) Barrows of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Leon Jr. of Beach Park, Ill., Jeffrey (Dawn) Barrows of Beaumont, Texas and Patrick (Kathy) Barrows of Zion, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 1 great, great grandson; his former wife and close friend, Mary Anne Hamilton of Beach Park, Ill.; 3 sisters, Eileen Smith of Park City, Ill., Joanne (Chester) Chase of Round Lake, Ill. and Patricia Theil of Waukegan; 3 brothers, Robert (Aldona) Barrows of Gurnee, Donald (Nancy) Barrows of North Chicago, and Jack (Maryann) Barrows of Schofield, Wis.; and numerous other relatives and friends.

            He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Mark.

            A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 1 P.M. on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Black River Falls. Full military honors were performed at the church.  Rev. Fr. Robert Streveler officiated. Burial rites were at 12 noon on Thursday, December 20, 2007 at Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville, Ill. with Rev. Fr. Jackson Collon officiating

JOAN   M. (MRS. CURTIS)  GILBERTSON

            Joan M. (Mrs. Curtis) Gilbertson, 62, of Black River Falls died Thursday, December 6, 2007 in Black River Memorial Hospital.

            Joan was born on September 1, 1945 in Black River Falls and was the daughter of Gordon and Dorothy (Johnson) Collum.  She was raised in the Black River Falls area and graduated from Black River Falls High School.  She had been a life long resident of Jackson County.

            She married Curtis “Curt” M. Gilbertson on June 30, 2000 in Black River Falls.

            Joan had been employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant for 27 years, first at Family Heritage Care Center and later at Pine View Care Center.  More recently, she had been employed as a housekeeper at the Arrowhead Lodge and the Majestic Pines Hotel

            She especially loved her grandchildren and her dog.  She also was an avid Elvis Presley fan. She enjoyed camping, working with Ho-Chunk children at the Indian Mission, fishing, animals, and raising goats and chickens.

            Survivors include her husband, Curt; 2 daughters, Kim (Randy) Pierson of Hatley, Wis., and Christy (David) Griswold of Oshkosh; a son, Dale (Kelly) Peters of Wausau; 8 grandchildren, Ashley, Dustin, Daven, James, Bradley, Kayla, Brandon, and Autumn; and a sister, Judy (Lance) Schultz of Glendale; and numerous other relatives and friends.

            Funeral services will be at 3 P.M. on Monday, December 10, 2007 at the Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, and burial will be in Sullivan Cemetery, rural Black River Falls.  The Rev. Meg Erickson will officiate.

DOROTHY  A.  POWELL

Black River Falls, WI

            Dorothy A. Powell, 98, of Black River Falls died Tuesday evening, November 27, 2007 at Family Heritage Care Center, Black River Falls.  She was born August 16, 1909 to Milton and Hannah (Eberhardt) Harpold, in Black River Falls, WI. 

            Dorothy grew up in Black River Falls.  While growing up Dorothy worked at the movie theater as manager and also at the Creamery as a bookkeeper.  Following graduation from Black River Falls High School she moved to Waupun, WI.  While living in Waupun, Dorothy worked in the kitchen at the Waupun Hospital.  After 20 years she moved to Montana for 5 years, then moved to the state of Washington for another 5 years.  Dorothy then returned to Black River Falls where she lived in her family’s home.  She later lived in the River Grove Apartments.

            Dorothy did a lot of volunteer work.  She volunteered at Pine View Nursing Home and also at the Tomah VA.  She worked with a lot of the items that were collected for the Historical Society.

            Dorothy attended various church women’s groups.  She enjoyed quilting and knitting mittens and scarves.  Dorothy was also a member of the Eastern Star. She was also a good cook.

            She is survived by a daughter, Judith (Ron) Heimbigner of Dunwoody, GA; 4 grandchildren, Ron Heimbigner, Jr., Dean (Jodi) Heimbigner, Stephen (Nicole) Heimbigner, and Michelle (Michael) Hazelton; 13 great grandchildren; one sister Alene Monson.

            She was preceded in death by her parents, Milton and Hannah; one brother, Leland Harpold.

            Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, November 30, 2007 from the Buswell Funeral Home and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, both in Black River Falls.  Rev. Calvin Thoreson will officiate.

LARRY  E.  SPRINGER

Black River Falls, WI

            Larry E. Springer, 62, of Black River Falls died on Monday, November 12, 2007 in his home under the care of Black River Hospice.

            Larry Edmand Springer was born on March 31, 1945 in Sparta to Edmand and Bernice (Soper) Springer.

            He married Patricia “Pat” V. Pascale on December 4, 1966 in Queens, New York. 

            While he was in high school. Larry was employed at the Langlois-Galston Funeral Home (now Buswell Funeral Home) of Black River Falls.  He later enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for 20 years, retiring in 1984 as a Sergeant First Class (E-7).  From 1984 to 1995 he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service at Merrifield, Virginia.  He and his wife, “Pat,” returned to Black River Falls in 2000.

            While in the military, Larry served and was stationed in Korea, Vietnam, Schofield Barracks - Hawaii, Germany, Fort Belvoir – Virginia, Fort Story – Virginia, Fort Meade – Maryland, Fort Ord – California, and Fort Riley – Kansas.  He had the distinction of receiving the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with 2 Clusters.

            He was a paid up for life member of the Thompson-RedCloud VFW Post 1959 of Black River Falls.  He enjoyed having coffee with friends at the Black River Falls Kwik Trip.

            Survivors include his wife, Patricia “Pat” of Black River Falls; 3 sisters, Carol (Keith) Fitzpatrick and LaVon (Harry) Schoolcraft of Black River Falls, and Emilie (Kim Kersting) Springer of Whitehall; 4 brothers, Calvin (Alice) Springer of Klamath Falls, Ore., Daniel (Sandra) Springer and Richard (Leona) Springer of Seaton, Ill., and Lowell “Ole” Springer; a sister-in-law, Carol (Michael) Noonan of Levittown, New York; and numerous nieces and nephews.

            He was preceded in death by a daughter, Terri Lynne Springer in 1988, and his parents.

            Military services were held at 8 P.M. on Thursday, November 15, 2007 at the Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls.  Services were conducted  by the Thompson-RedCloud VFW Post 1959 and the Miles-Hagen American Legion Post 200.  Kenneth Schoolcraft served as the chaplain. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

LEO N. FRISTED  

Black River Falls, WI

     Leo N. Fristed, 88, of Black River Falls died Friday evening, November 9, 2007 at Family Heritage Care Center, Black River Falls.

      Leo Neil Fristed was born on April 2, 1919 in Hayward, Wis. to Peter and Retha (Kesler) Fristed.  The family moved to Webster when Leo was 7 years old.

     He was a World War II Army veteran including 3 years in the European Theater. 

     Leo married the former Marie Finch Fitzpatrick on December 3, 1947 in Webster.  The couple moved to Black River Falls in 1951.  Marie Fristed died on July 11, 2001. 

     He was employed as a pulp wood hauler for Nekoosa Edwards Paper Co. for 5 years.  For 11 years, he was employed by Black River Wholesale as a delivery driver and warehouse man.  He was later employed by the Black River Falls Street Department for 16 years, retiring in 1984.

     Leo was a member of the Miles-Hagen American Legion Post 200.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, carpentry and wood-working, working in his workshop, gardening, U.S. history, and birds.

     Survivors include a son, Dale (Linda) Fitzpatrick of Chippewa Falls; 5 grandchildren, Christine (Randy) Jensen of Augusta, Bonnie (Chris) Paladino of Alexandria, Virginia, Joe (Heather) Schoenberger of LaPorte City, Iowa, Tim Fitzpatrick of Chippewa Falls, and Michael (Angela) Fitzpatrick of Waterloo, Iowa; numerous great grandchildren; a great great granddaughter; 2 sisters, Hazel Meyers of Webster and Anna (Duane) Nickerson of Mounds View, Minn.; a brother, Albert (Alice) Fristed of Prior Lake, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Janina Fristed of Baldwin; very special friends, Lou and Nyla Musser of Black River Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews.

     In addition to his wife, Marie, he was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Carles, Walter, and Owen Fristed.

DEBRA “DEBBIE” L. HALL

Black River Falls, WI

      Debra “Debbie” L. Hall, 54, of Black River Falls and formerly of Alma Center, died Thursday, November 8, 2007 in her home under the care of Black River Hospice.

     Debra Lee Hall was born on September 16, 1954 in La Crosse to Victor E. and Deloris M. (Kendhammer) Hall.  She was raised at Holmen and graduated from Holmen High School.  She also attended college where she studied bookkeeping and accounting.

      She was employed as a bookkeeper, accountant, and secretary in the medical field.  She had been employed as a bookkeeper by St. Mary’s Hospital, Madison.

      Debbie had lived in the Alma Center area for 16 years.  She also had lived in Madison for 2 years, prior to settling in the Black River Falls area.

      Her hobbies included making blankets, photography, making people happy and angry, and “raising Cain.”

      Survivors include a daughter, Alison (Mike) O’Brien of Black River Falls; 4 grandchildren, Heaven, Autumn, Devin, and Aaron; 4 sisters, Vickie Prindle of Merrillan, Patricia Brey of Alma Center, Susan Hall of Black River Falls, and Ann (Clarence) Maack of La Crosse; a brother, Ralph (Pat) Zilke of Rockland; several nieces and nephews; 2 dogs, Sadie and Buster Lea; and a cat, Simon.

     She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; and her dog, “Peanut.”

ROBERT “BOB” W. SCHLEGEL

Black River Falls, WI

            Robert “Bob” W. Schlegel, 86 of Black River Falls and long-time resident of the Town of Irving, Jackson County, died Thursday, November 8, 2007 in Pine View Care Center, Black River Falls.

            Robert Wensel Schlegel was born on April 21, 1921 in the Township of Irving, Jackson County, to Wensel and Julia (Gilbertson) Schlegel.  He was raised in the Township of Irving and graduated from Black River Falls High School. He farmed on the family farm for most of his life. 

            Bob had been a resident of Pine View Care Center since April of 2004.

            Survivors include a cousin, George (Zella) Schlegel of Woodville; cousins-once removed Jane Szymanski and James (Jane) Prindle of Alma Center, Allen (Nancy) Prindle of Radnor, Ohio, Doris Prindle of Eau Claire, Myra (Steve) Douglass of Atascadero, Calif., Alice (James) Cardella of Novi, Mich., Georgia Larsen of Menomonie, Wis., Paula (Mike) Bonderenko. of Woodville, Edward (Glendyr) Schlegel of Black River Falls, numerous other cousins-once-removed; and his guardian and friend, Jan Guy of Black River Falls.

            Bob was preceded in death by 2 brothers, John and James Schlegel, and a sister, Esther.

LYLE  N.  LIEN

Taylor, WI

            Lyle N. Lien, 73, of rural Taylor (Town of Franklin), died  on Sunday, November4, 2007 in Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, La Crosse.

            Lyle Norman Lien was  born on March 4, 1934 in the Town of Franklin to Edward and Lillian (Greenshield) Lien.  He was raised in the Town of Franklin and later served in the U.S. Army.

Lyle married the former Judith Bahnub in 1959 and they were later divorced.

            Following his discharge from the Army, Lyle became engaged in farming in the Town of Franklin and later in Taylor. While still farming, he also became employed by the Jackson County Highway Department and later by Hoffman Construction of Black River Falls.  Following his retirement in 1999 from Hoffman Construction as a heavy equipment operator, he enjoyed raising Arabian horses, repairing antique farm tractors, motorcycle riding, old time dancing, hunting and fishing.

            He was a life long and proud member of the Upper Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Taylor.            

           Survivors include 3 daughters, Kathy (Mark) Perner of Black River Falls, Katy (Michael) Maldonado of Blair, and Jill (Lars Johnson) Lien of Black River Falls; a son, Jeffrey (Amy) Lien of Black River Falls; 8 grandchildren, Michael Rivera, Michelle Lien, Dena Maldonado, Lyle Lien, Amanda Lien, Anna Lien, Kyler Abbott, and Lillian Hartwig; a special friend, Arlene Dunnigan of Black River Falls; 2 sisters, Delores Kampen of Black River Falls and Edith Noren of Blair; a brother, Carroll (Merna Kechner) Lien of Buchanan, West Virginia; a sister-in-law, Norma Lien of Ettrick; nieces, nephews; and other relatives.

            He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, LaVern “Bud” Lien and Ray Lien; a sister, Pearl Thompson; step-sisters; and step-brothers.

  Orland C. Lien 

Laurel, Mississippi/ formerly of West Allis and Town of Franklin (Melrose), Wis.

 Orland C. Lien, age 95, of Laurel, Mississippi and formerly of West Allis and rural Melrose, Wis., passed away, Saturday, October 27, 2007, at the Jones County Rest Home, Ellisville, Mississippi.

 Orland Clinton Lien was born on May 27, 1912 in the Town of Franklin, Jackson County, Wis. to Emil and Cora (Johnson) Lien.  He was raised in the Town of Franklin and later attended welding school. 

He married the former Dorothy P. Zautner on May 25, 1940 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sullivan, Wis.  The couple lived in West Allis, Wis. for many years.  

Orland was employed by Allis Chalmers of West Allis first as a welder and later as a supervisor.  Following his retirement, he and Dorothy moved to rural Melrose where they remodeled the former Franklin School into a delightful home.  Orland and Dorothy also spent the winter months in Haines City, Florida for many years until moving to Laurel, Miss. in 1995.  Dorothy P. Lien died on September 7, 2006. 

He was a lifetime member of the Upper Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Taylor.  He enjoyed trout fishing and deer hunting. 

Survivors include 2 sons, Dennis (Judy) Lien of West Allis and Wayne Lien of Laurel, Miss.; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Viola Oshetski of Black River Falls, Esther (Lawrence) Potter of San Diego, Calif., and Violet (Vernon) Rogstad of York, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Doris Lien of Black River Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his wife, Dorothy, Orland was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Myrtle Halverson; and 2 brothers, Emerson Lien and Joseph Lien. 

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 1, 2007, 1:00 p.m., at the Upper Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Taylor.  Rev. Jacob Jacobs will be officiating.  Burial will follow in the Upper Beaver Creek Lutheran Cemetery.  The Women of the Upper Beaver Creek Lutheran Church will be serving a lunch following the service.

Walter Swiggum

 Black River Falls, WI 

Walter Swiggum, age 96, passed away Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at the Pine View Care Center, Black River Falls, WI.  He was born December 8, 1910, to Syver and Anna (Mikkelson) Swiggum in Mount Horeb, WI. 

Walter grew up in Mount Horeb.  On April 18, 1936, he was united in marriage to Arlene Schluter in Mount Horeb, WI.  Together they moved up to the Black River Falls area, where they spent the rest of their lives.  Walter worked for the Swenson and Christiansen Construction, Nelson Construction and Lunda Construction Companies before retiring in 1974.    In March 1977 Arlene had passed away.

 Walter was a Past Master of the Black River Masonic Lodge No. 74, F. & A.M., he was a member of Eastern Star, and a member of Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church, which he helped build.  Walter enjoyed hunting, musky fishing, and especially his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

 He is survived by one daughter, Barbara (Gene) Mason; one son, Robert (Janice) Swiggum, both of Black River Falls, WI; five grandchildren, Karen (Gary) Stout of St. Cloud, FL, Charles (Kerri) Swiggum of Chili, WI, Michael (Izumi) Mason of Clarkson, MI, Mary (Earl) Hammond of Holmen, WI, Bill (Dana) Mason of Holmen, WI; eight great grandchildren, Annelise and Gunnar Swiggum, Madilyn and Abigail Mason, Max and Samantha Hammond, Sara and Brennan Mason; brother-in-law, Carl (Lorraine) Schluter of Fairchild, WI; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene; parents Syver and Anna; one infant son; 9 brothers, 2 sisters, and nieces and nephews.

 Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 27, 2007, 10:00 a.m., at the Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church.  Rev. Leslie E. Fontaine 

Black River Falls, WI 

Leslie E. Fontaine, age 56, of Black River Falls, WI, passed away Friday, October 12, 2007, at the Tomah Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Tomah, Wis. 

Les was born on August 13, 1951 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina to Clement and Donna (Quakenbush) Fontaine.  He was raised in Mounds View, Minn. and later lived in Black River Falls. 

He graduated from Mounds View High School and later attended college at Bemidji State University, Bemidji, Minn.  He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 2 years. 

Les was married to the former Sally Schmidt and they were later divorced. 

 Les enjoyed hunting and fishing. 

Survivors include a daughter, Leslie (Vince) Salter of Coon Rapids, Minn.; his father, Clem Fontaine of Black River Falls; 2 sisters, Mary Fontaine of Washington DC, and Carolyn (Peter) Gorman of Italy; and a brother, Gus (Nancy) Fontaine of Washington State. 

He was preceded in death by his mother.

AULINE  M.  DETTINGER

Black River Falls, WI

     Auline M. Dettinger, 86, of Black River Falls died on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at Parkside Residence, Black River Falls, under the care of Black River Hospice.

     Auline Myrtle Joten was born on September 3, 1921 in Taylor, Wis. to Edward and Alma (Heggeness) Joten.  She was raised in Taylor and graduated from Taylor High School in 1940.  She was the valedictorian of her high school graduating class.

     She married Mahlon Dettinger on November 28, 1942 in the Pigeon Falls Lutheran parsonage.  She and Mahlon farmed in the Northfield area on the Dettinger 100 Year Farm.  Auline also had been employed as a nurse’s aide at Pine View Care Center of Black River Falls.  Mahlon Dettinger died in 1982. 

     Auline later moved to Black River Falls. She had lived in Jackson County all of her life.

     She had been a member of the Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church and a member of its Sewing Circle and a task force in charge of funeral lunches.  She also had been a volunteer at the Pine View Care Center of Black River Falls and had served as a caregiver to friends and neighbors.  Auline had the distinction of having been nominated for the Jackson County Volunteer award.

     Auline was an avid Scrabble player.  She also enjoyed quilting, gardening, and baking.

     Survivors include a daughter, Nancy (Charles) Nibbe of Black River Falls; 3 sons, David (Kae) Dettinger of Black River Falls, Wayne (Gayle) Dettinger of Roll, Ariz., and Andy (Diana) Dettinger of Lodi, Wis.; 12 grandchildren, Brian, Brad, Mytrice, Francesca, Malcom, Andrea, Todd, Joanne, Gary, Greg, David and Eddie; 7 great grandchildren, Alexander, Skyler, Breanna, Zach, Skylyr, Ayden, and Ryder; 2 sisters, Helen Larson of Sauk City and Lillian Osegard of Taylor; 2 brothers, Merlin (Delores) Joten and Johnny (Joyce) Joten both of Taylor; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

     In addition to her husband, Auline was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Edwin; and a sister, Grace. 

     Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at the Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church.  Pastor Ramie Bakken will officiate.  Burial will be in the Pigeon Creek Cemetery at Northfield.

     Family and friends were invited for visitation on Tuesday from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Buswell Funeral Home (www.buswellfuneralhome.com), Black River Falls, and at the church on Wednesday from 10 A.M. until services.

     Memorials may be given to either Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers, Black River Hospice, or the Mayo Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.

LILLIAN   M.  ZILLMER

Black River Falls, WI

            Lillian M. Zillmer, 93, of Black River Falls, died on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 in Pine View Care Center, Black River Falls.

            Lillian Mary Roberts was born on August 1, 1914 in the Town of Manchester, Jackson County, to William and Harriet (Farrington) Roberts.  She had lived in the Town of Manchester most of her life.

            She married Fred Rhoades on January 31, 1933 in Sparta and he died on March 2, 1965.  On October 9, 1971, she married Gilbert Zillmer at Peace Lutheran Church, rural Cataract and he died on August 10, 1990.

            Lillian had been employed as a sorter by Hableman Brothers Cranberry Marsh for 4 or 5 years.  She also had cleaned cabins at Polly Falls and did laundry and ironing for Ray and Dave Mann. 

            She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, now known as Faith Lutheran Church.  She enjoyed gardening, collecting stuffed animals, sewing, and quilting. 

            Survivors include 2 daughters, Evelyn (LeRoy “Mac”) McLain and Dorothy (Ronald) Wallace both of Black River Falls; 11 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; a sister, Hattie West of Black River Falls; and numerous other relatives and friends.

            In addition to both husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Hillman Henry Rhoades; a daughter, Lillian L. Zillmer in 1990; 3 grandchildren; and 2 brothers, Willie and Melvin Roberts.

            Funeral services will be at 11 A.M. on Monday, October 15, 2007, from the Peace Lutheran Church, now known as Faith Lutheran Church, rural Cataract.  Rev. Nathan Berg will officiate and burial will be in the Shamrock Union Cemetery, Town of Manchester, Jackson County.

            Family and friends are invited for visitation from 3 to 5 P.M. on Sunday, October 14, at the Buswell Funeral Home (www.buswellfuneralhome.com), Black River Falls, and at the church on Monday from 10 A.M. until services.

DONALD E. “DON” HILL

Merrillan, WI

            Donald E. “Don” Hill, 87, of Merrillan died Sunday, October 7, 2007 in Black River Memorial Hospital.

            Don was born on May 1, 1920 in Hill City, Minn. to Benjamin and Agnes (Foyx) Hill.  He was raised in Hill City and Grand Rapids, Minn. 

            A World War II veteran, he entered the US Army while living in Grand Rapids.  He served in the South Pacific and was a member of the Army 81st Wild Cat Division.

            Don operated a service station in Grand Rapids.   He had also lived and worked in Arizona and Milwaukee.  After moving to Jackson County, he first lived in the Township of Brockway and later in Hatfield, before settling in Merrillan.

             He was a “jack of all trades.”  He could fix and drive anything that had a motor.  He especially enjoyed cars.  He also was a collector of antiques and enjoyed fishing, hunting, the outdoors, and visiting the Majestic Pines Casino and Bingo every Wednesday and Sunday. 

            Don was a member of the Thompson-RedCloud Medal of Honor Post 1959 of Black River Falls.

            Survivors include a brother, Lloyd Hill of Grand Rapids, Minn.; a step-daughter, Lillian Burns of New Orleans; special friends, Raymond and Lee Lopez of Merrillan; and several nieces and nephews.

            Don was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, William, Alfred, and Louis Hill; and 3 sisters, Laura, Shirley, and Ida.

            Funeral services, with military honors by Thompson RedCloud VFW Post 1959 and Miles-Hagen American Legion Post 200, will be at 6 P.M. on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at the Buswell Funeral Home (www.buswellfuneralhome.com), Black River Falls.  Rev. Meg Erickson will officiate.

            Family and friends are invited for visitation from 4 to 6 P.M. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

VIRGINIA GRACE ALLEN JAMES

Altoona/Eau Claire/Black River Falls, Wis.

            Virginia Grace Allen James, 92, of Eau Claire and formerly of Altoona and Black River Falls died Monday evening, October 1, 2007 in the Syverson Lutheran Home, Eau Claire.

            Virginia Grace Allen was born on May 8, 1915 in Augusta, Wis. to Ernest and Grace Hazelton Allen.  She was raised in Eau Claire and graduated from Eau Claire High School and, in 1938, from Eau Claire Teachers College.

            After being employed as the librarian at the Purdy Junior High School in Marshfield, she studied physical medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.  After graduating there, she enlisted in the Physical Therapy Corps of the U. S. Army Medical Corps. 

            From the Schlicter General Hospital in Clinton, Iowa, she was assigned to the 200th General Hospital for overseas duty as head of the physical therapy department.  After a two month waiting period in England, the 200th was sent to Paris where the members functioned as a rest and recuperation unit with headquarters in the Grand Hotel.

            Two weeks after the Germans were driven from Napoleon’s Cavalry Barracks in the Soissons, France, the 200th was sent to occupy this area and set up a RAMP hospital (Repatriation Allied Military Hospital).

            On April 24, 1945, Virginia married Paul L. James, an Infantry Captain in the 118th Infantry of the 30th Division.  Two weeks after victory in Europe, the 200th received notice that it was being sent to the China Burma India Theatre.  The married women were all sent to other installations, Virginia being sent to the 79th General Hospital at the Liege, Belgium.  Upon arrival in Antwerp, Virginia discovered that the hospital, which had been a tent hospital, had been bombed by the Germans in the final days of World War II.  The 79th was now set up in an orphanage in Antwerp, Belgium.

            Upon returning to the United States, Virginia and Paul spent the rest of their working lives teaching in various Wisconsin high schools and 26 years in Rockford, Ill.  They retired to Ocala, Florida and later moved to Greenville, South Carolina where Paul died in 1991.  Virginia has lived with her sister, Geraldine Colby, in Black River Falls, Altoona and Eau Claire for the past 13 years.

            Virginia was an artist (painting) and enjoyed geneology.

            Survivors include her sister, Geraldine “Geri” Colby of Eau Claire; nephews, Stephen (Sue) Colby and William (Shari) Colby of California, and Frederick (Jean) Colby of Missouri; and cousins, Richard (Mary Jean) Hazelton and  LeVon (Loren) Walker.

            Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at 2 P.M. on Thursday, October 4, 2007 in Riverside Cemetery, Black River Falls.

OPAL  A.  KORANDA

Black River Falls, WI 

            Opal A. Koranda, 80, of Black River Falls died Thursday evening, September 27, 2007 in her home.

            Opal Agnes Hart was born on May 23, 1927 on the Robert W. Iliff farm in the Township of Garden Valley, Jackson County, to Herman Jr. and Agnes (Sichler) Hart.  In the early 1930’s, the family moved to the August Koehler farm also in the Township of Garden Valley.  In 1933, the family moved to the Mayo place north of Alma Center.

            Opal’s great grandfather, Frederick (Herzog) Hart, and family immigrated from Germany to the United States in September 1872.  Their home farm was located 2 ¼ miles southeast of Alma Center and was registered under the Homestead Act on June 1, 1880.

She first attended Pomeroy School and later Judkins School.  In 1944, she graduated from Alma Center High School and then attended Winona Secretarial School in Winona, Minn. for one year. She returned to rural Alma Center in July 1945 following the haying accident death of her father, where she cared for the family home while her brother, Earl, operated the farm.

            In January 1946, Opal started employment with Northern States Power Company of Eau Claire in the property records department. 

            On September 4, 1948, she married George James Koranda at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Alma Center attended by George’s brother, Albert, and Opal’s sister, Rose Mary.  The couple first lived on the Koranda home farm in the Township of Komensky, Jackson County.  In August 1951, George and Opal moved into the City of Black River Falls where they raised their family. 

            After their sons were enrolled in school, Opal began working for the Black River Falls School District as an elementary school secretary.
